Central Asia is one of those legendary areas of the world that the more adventurous traveler always has in mind when planning dream trips. For those adventurous teachers who want to live in and explore Central Asia, Tashkent International School offers that opportunity.
Tashkent International School is a non-profit, co-educational day school. TIS was founded 13 years
ago so it is a relativity new school on the international scene. It is accredited by CIS (Council of International Schools) and New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The school has full-time security on an enclosed campus. There are 23 full-time faculty members, as well as 9 part-time members. Teachers come from the US, Canada, Ireland, the UK, Luxembourg, Holland, France, and other countries. Eight of the full-time faculty are from the US. 54% of the faculty have advanced degrees.
TIS has over 300 students and is a PreK-12 school. The average class size is 15 which is an average number of students per class at an international school. Students come from over 35 different countries. 20% of the student population are US citizens.
The school offers a college prep curriculum and instruction is in English. TIS is an IB World School and is authorized to offer the IB Diploma Program to 11th and 12th Grade students. It is in the process of developing a PYP and MYP program as well. Their curriculum is based on the PYP/MYP model. The school was founded 13 years ago. TIS offers AP courses for high school students.
The school has an ESL program for students that need assistance with English. TIS also hosts many extra-curricular activities such as athletics, the Model UN, Student Council, Yearbook and community service.
TIS has a new facility with three computer labs, a media center and indoor gym, an auditorium, three science labs, air-conditioned classrooms, and full physical education facilities. The Tashkent International Medical Clinic is located on school grounds. The school is expanding rapidly, and they do a lot of outreach into the local community.

Tashkent International School, using an American based curriculum, will educate students to become ethical, responsible, productive citizens of the world with the skills to think creatively, reason critically, and to communicate effectively.
Technology at TIS
TIS emphasizes the role of technology in the school and works on an integrated approach into learning outcomes and subject areas. The IT coordinator works with classroom teachers on integration projects. All classrooms have networked computers. The school has three computer labs.
About teaching at TIS
TIS wants teachers who are fluent in English, have IB teaching experience, are technologically literate, have degree-level qualifications in their subject areas, have a child-centered approach to education, are team players and embrace the Mission and Beliefs of the school. The school specifically notes on its website that candidates may want to email staff, administration, PTA members, and faculty about life at the school and in Tashkent.
In order to apply, candidates should send a cover letter stating why they want to work at TIS, a resume, and recent copies of recommendations. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed either by Web-based videoconferencing, or in person interviews at recruiting fairs. Candidates may also be interviewed in Tashkent if the opportunity arises.
Salaries run from USD$ 29,000-$42,000. Benefits include round-trip airfare, furnished housing with utilities, 8% retirement benefit, insurance, annual home leave. Many expat teachers have as much as 70% of their income available after paying for living costs.
About Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan is one of the Central Asia countries. It is located between Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Kyrgyzstan. It is predominately steppe and desert, but does have rich farmland in the eastern part of the country. The northern part of the country lies on the Aral Sea. Cotton is the major export, but Uzbekistan also exports gold, oil, and natural gas. 60% of the population lives in rural areas. Temperatures fluctuate greatly in the country; the north is coldest and the south warmest. In the north temperatures can fall to -35 degrees Celsius and reach 45 degrees Celsius in the south during the summer months.
Tashkent is the capital and the major industrial and transportation center of Uzbekistan. It has a population of around 2.5 million and has a subway. Tashkent was founded around the 1st century B.C. and has been invaded by the Arabs, Genghis Khan, Tamerlane and Russia. The city’s name means Stone Fortress.
